Food can become contaminated at any stage of the food chain, during production, processing, distribution, or preparation. As 90% of Singapore’s food consumption are imported,  Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has been enforcing food safety standards for all foods imported from the point of production to the point food is sold.

Food operators in Singapore will face harsher penalties when involved in major food poisoning incidents.

First-time offenders under the Environmental Public Health Act face a maximum fine of $10,000, while repeat offenders face a fine of up to $20,000, three months in jail or both. The NEA and AVA will also press for deterrent sentences to be imposed by the court, where appropriate.
