News from The Straits Times, on 21 June 2016, Dawn Plastic Industries was fined $220,000 due to an accident that caused the death of a store-man at a warehouse last year. It was pleaded guilty to one charge under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
Following are the findings after the investigation:
1) Employees had to climb up high levels at the warehouse using unsecured ladders
2) No guard-rails or safety barriers to prevent workers from falling from a high level
3) The warehouse was crammed, and boxes were stored at unstable positions
4) Failed to carry out a Risk Assessment, and no safe work procedures were established for its warehousing activities
MOM has introduced stiffer enforcement penalties due to increasing workplace accident rate since May this year. It is extremely crucial to complete proper Risk Assessment at your workplace.
